A multi-site multimedia skills-evaluation and development system for the tourism industry

Objective

The economies of the Member States are characterised by a continuing growth in tourism services. Faced with an increasingly international sector, tourism companies - which are generally SMEs guided by regional or national logic - are being confronted with multiple internal and external problems of efficiency, quality management, etc. The companies and universities involved in the project have established that there is a lack of training on quality issues. The partners of the "ODYSSEY" project propose to set up a modern education system which will enable interested parties to master technical tools, acquire an overall view of the sector, develop a customer approach focused on quality of services, and advance their skills in relation to negotiation and partnerships. The initiative will also lead to skills acquisition in the area of new information technologies. Following identification and analysis of training and qualification requirements of European companies in the sector, a tool suitable for initial and continuing training will be developed. This tool will combine:
- an industrial simulation that enables participants to take on management roles;
- theme-based modules with computerised skills-evaluation;
- theme-based modules on computerised training and self-study;
- a series of documents in electronic and paper form.

This multi-site system will make extensive use of modern communications and multimedia techniques. The main target group comprises senior executives, staff and future staff of SMEs in the sector.

Impact
The ODYSSEY project will provide for innovation in tourism-sector SMEs by linking a multi-site multimedia company simulation with a skills-assessment and self-evaluation concept.
