Computer-assisted development of language teaching units based on authentic language material

Objective

The Internet as a new market with its possibilities of virtual fairs, customer canvassing and fostering business relations is meeting with a high level of acceptance. However, anyone wanting to benefit from these new technologies and take an active part in the information society must first learn how to deal with it. This is not possible without knowledge of foreign languages.

It has been established that there is interest in specialised foreign language courses. The aim is to cater for this interest by means of target-group and context-oriented language courses based on authentic corpora. This is to be done initially in the form of a software package limited to the German, Spanish and English languages, which will enable foreign-language learners to convert their own authentic texts into various model exercises as well as be available to self-learners. Demand-oriented expansion of the software package to include Finnish, Greek and Italian can, where applicable, be implemented in the final phase of the project. For licensing reasons and to reduce costs, the software package will initially be available only on the Internet. The target-group envisaged by the project will comprise commercial foreign-language service providers, foreign-language departments of the higher-education institutions involved as well as companies requiring foreign-language services in the regions involved in the project. Suppliers and potential users are to be brought together by means of an on-going survey of the potential supply and demand in the area of foreign-language services combined with corresponding PR work.

Impact
The project focuses on developing a foreign-language package tailored to the use of new information technologies, thus encouraging access to new communication media and promoting the dissemination of these at pan-European level.
