Immigration, integration and exclusion

Objective

Economic recession caused by international economic development mitigates against the acceptance, integration and employment of foreigners. Society, and particularly urban areas, exclude foreigners via unemployment and the labour market selection process. All the project partners have extensive experience that will enable them to propose concepts, methods and initiatives for the social integration of migrant workers in the partners' countries. Those involved in the project share the objective of preventing the social isolation of migrants and their children, and creating social, cultural and occupational integration mechanisms using all the guidance, training and employment-preparation facilities available until the target-groups have been socially integrated. To achieve this objective, they have decided to pool experience, improve their methods and attempt to overcome common difficulties.

The project has been designed to quickly identify common aspects, as well as characteristics specific to the individual target groups, cultures and traditions of the countries and regions concerned so that responses to identified needs can be improved. Specific case studies will form the basis of the project's recommendations, with the main priority on providing access to employment. The documents published will present the project's achievements and indicate how the experience gathered can be transferred to other areas.

Impact
Impact is expected at several levels: increased individual and political awareness of the extent of the immigration/exclusion/integration problem as well as other specific aspects that cannot be overlooked, development of information, guidance and training systems to take account of the urgent need to apply innovative solutions and co-operation between social, economic and political partners on the basis of guidelines proposed by the project.
