Long-term unemployed: a neglected resource in society

Objective

Escalating competition for jobs in the European labour market has reduced employment opportunities for the long-term unemployed and socially excluded groups. Many young people are still leaving education unprepared for the world of work. The main objective of this pilot project is to set up a transnational work placement scheme to provide the long-term unemployed with a second chance and facilitate their entry into the labour market. Students will be offered the opportunity to practice a variety of jobs to gain new experience of working life and develop personal and social skills.

The project partnership will analyse existing training strategies and develop a model for evaluation which will be disseminated to other organisations working with disadvantaged groups. The aims are to develop individual study programmes to promote equality of access to initial and continuing vocational training, and to increase the European dimension in education by developing new contacts for the transnational exchange of teachers, trainers and students.

Impact
This project will have a direct impact on raising the skill level and employability of the long-term unemployed. Increased transnational co-operation will contribute to a holistic European model that will modernise existing vocational training provision in this area.
