Objective
Foyers have existed for young workers in France for around 60 years, with a network of 470 projects across the country offering accommodation, training, job-search, social education and support and leisure activity all under one roof. They allow disadvantaged young people a period of stability while they make friends, find permanent accommodation and get a job or improve their skills. In 1992 the first foyer schemes opened in the UK and the network has grown rapidly since.
This project will develop a programme in transversal competences or basic skills in three capital cities - London, Paris and Dublin. Each city will test existing training packs in these areas within their projects with the intention of refining the training material and developing new modules. In the first 18 months the project will identify gaps and develop/introduce new training material to tailor the pack to the needs of foyer clients. The second phase will be to exchange experience between the cities, to introduce best practice from each of the others and to investigate the development of common modules which can be taught in any of the three cities.
Impact
The ultimate impact will be the introduction of high quality, proven pre-vocational training systems across all European foyers and linked training/employment/accommodation projects.
