Objective
One of the most innovative fields in the construction industry, with a very high development potential, is wood construction, which offers expanded market opportunities particularly to small and medium-sized firms. A prerequisite for this, however, is that the workers must be appropriately qualified, and that firms must attend to the quality of the products offered and their suitability for customers. The different traditions and experience in wood construction in the different countries should also be used productively.
The pilot project will concentrate on special, individual customer advising, and less on standard and quantity-oriented manufacture. Training methods emphasising personality and key qualifications will be developed; these will, among other things, help trainees to recognise and practice the new modes of working and cooperation needed for new develop-ments in wood construction and their quality-oriented marketing. The methodo-logical and didactic theme running through this will be value-creation, from forestry and the obtaining of raw material, through production and assembly, to the handing-over to the customer. The thematic core of the modules will be the customer-related, social, and qualification-related activities which accompany this process (e.g. preparation/planning, production, assembly/customer).
Impact
In-house learning will extend the traditional learning organisation, which is usually restricted to single persons and single firms. This will give the impetus for setting up new structures, which can be filled by the combined specialist and cross-disciplinary contents of the modules. By extending specialist knowledge and including it in key competencies, the efficiency of specialist ability and the attractiveness of the occupational field of wood construction will be increased.
