Public libraries tackle marginalisation: new functions, new challenges

Objective

The role of public libraries in helping people facing social, physical or cultural exclusion is poorly defined. This pilot project, which brings together German, French, Italian and Hungarian partners, aims to address this weakness. BIBLEX will run over three years and consist of three phases.

The first phase will consist of a survey of the needs of library professionals and of the marginalised groups, finding individuals capable of mediating between these professionals and the marginalised groups, and exchanging experiences between the various European partners. The second phase will attempt to establish training courses and promote exchanges between training specialists and specialists in the field. It will, above all, aim to develop a new training tool and define support strategies for these new methods of combating social, physical or cultural exclusion. Finally, the third phase will be devoted to the transfer of skills between the various partners, through new training seminars and the development of systems for the geographical and institutional dissemination of the results. The latter will be published in paper and electronic formats, and educational software accessible to all the individuals involved will be produced.

Impact
This pilot project will help combat social, physical or cultural exclusion, and facilitate the transfer of new skills through the sharing of a diverse range of experiences.
