Skill formation for shopfloor-oriented technologies

Objective

Continuing education in production-oriented industries typically targets managers and workers as distinct groups. As advanced technology based production systems increasingly involve the shopfloor in the management process, this vertical training is no longer relevant, and new approaches are required. This project aims to meet this need by developing a training model and programme which will be designed to create a more collaborative, open work atmosphere. This should ensure a more efficient use of resources in metal processing, particular in SMEs.

Partners will develop and test methodology and programmes for shopfloor training. Modules will be designed to use CAD/CAM techniques to achieve a stable manufacturing process. Other modules will promote understanding of inter-professional cooperative work as a means of meeting market demands in matters of quality and delivery times. Training materials will be designed for semi-autonomous learning supported by external trainers, and for autonomous, on-the-job learning. The materials will be partially adaptable in distance learning internet training.

Products will include training manuals and multimedia based support material. Training games for training in joint shopfloor/manager problem solving exercises will also be developed, and will be multimedia based for simulation purposes. Project results will be disseminated by the training centres. Programmes, modules and materials will be presented at workshops involving other production oriented SMEs, training centres, employer associations and trade unions.

Impact
The project will lead to the development of innovative training programmes, and will promote new approaches to continuing education in advanced technology-led SMEs.
