Objective
The development of self-employment is considered, at European level, to be a way of fighting unemployment. But this means that people choosing this option need to be adequately prepared and trained for this form of work. Research in this area is scarce and the problem is aggravated by the fact that there are many different types of self-employment across the European Union. The partners in this survey and analysis project have therefore decided to limit the scope of their work to the trade, education and transport sectors. This will facilitate the development of a comparative approach when it comes to considering the particular difficulties self-employed people face.
In the first phase, the partners will analyse the basic characteristics of self-employment in each of the participating countries. They will also look into the legal and institutional framework with regard to the access of self-employed people to training. They will then proceed with a classification of self-employed workers at sectoral level. The final product will be a report on the factors preventing self-employed people from accessing training and on the specific training needs of self-employed workers in the trade, transport and education sectors.
Impact
The project will enable national and regional authorities to establish relevant training measures to encourage training for the self-employed.
