Skills tracking within European placements

Objective

Students need to be able to produce evidence of skills they have acquired during a work placement that will enhance their employability on leaving university. This is particularly important when their placement is not officially accredited by their university as part of their studies programme. The project responds to this need and to that of companies, and in particular for SMEs, to manage work placements more effectively in order to maximise the benefits of having a student undertake a business development project. Lastly, European placements organisers and tutors face great difficulties in managing and monitoring this complex activity.

The overall aim of this project is to set up a network to develop a quality framework for the management, monitoring and recognition of European student placements programmes. There will be three main products :

- the 'European Skills Tracker', an interactive computer-based programme which will allow students to assess their skills as they progress through a transnational work placement;
- the 'Placement Management Handbook for Small Companies', a manual to assist small companies to manage the placement more effectively and to help them to gain maximum benefit from the project placement;
- 'Guidelines for Placements Organisers and Tutors', a set of guidelines (paper and disk-based) to support the management process of the transnational placement.

Impact
The partnership expects this project to have an impact on the quality of European placements programmes; on the learning attitude of students and young graduates; on their employability; on skills acknowledgement and recognition; and on SMEs attitude towards graduates and Europe.
