Objective
This project has been developed in cooperation with the Neorion shipyard, the oldest ship repairing company in Greece, which, though successful and expanding, recognises the sensitivity of the sector. Indeed, the ship building-ship repairing industry is one of the industrial sectors hardest hit by economic change. The emergence of low cost units in SE Asia has led to mass dismissals or closures in many European shipyards. Innovative ideas, changed production processes and reduced costs are urgently needed to increase competitiveness and preserve the remaining jobs.
A major cost factor in ship repairing is hauling and docking. Restricting work processes to carry out repairs underwater will reduce costs but will also result in new skills requirements. This project aims to examine the impact of reorganisation on existing jobs, and to develop and test skills training programmes to prepare workers for adapting to this change.
Partners will survey current job content structure and redefine occupational profiles in the light of the proposed changes. Training modules and materials will be designed to reflect the new needs. They will be developed for use with selected groups of underwater workers. Project results will be disseminated through seminars and the media, and via the partnership network.
Impact
The project will have an impact on organisational characteristics and management policies in the sector, and promote worker mobility.
