Objective
The CALÓ self-employment project is targeted at gypsies, especially those who are in prison or who have recently been released form prison. Its main goal is to combat gypsies' exclusion from the labour market by promoting their access to training and education. The project proposes a creative solution to this problem by developing regular self-employment in black market activities and professions.
The partners will undertake qualitative field research to determine the practical competences people currently use at work, as well as the knowledge and skills they use in their daily lives. This research will provide the basis for the production of relevant material for a series of training workshops. The starting point for the training will be the skills that adults already possess, rather than what they lack. The 'learning to learn and learning by doing' approach will be adopted.
The training workshops will be designed to promote self-employment, using simulated experiences of cooperative work, mentoring, guidance and evaluation. The results of the project will be made available in the form of a guide and through a web site.
Impact
The involvement of the Department of Justice of the Generalitat de Catalunya will ensure that the project has a positive and effective impact on the rehabilitation of imprisoned and formerly imprisoned gypsies, and their integration into the labour market.
