Granite works in international markets

Objective

The increasing complexity of trading relations between different countries, together with the globalisation of the economy, is an important issue in all sectors and across Europe. However, it is particularly important in the Galician stone extraction sector because 70% of extracted stone comes from other countries in Europe, America or Asia. Local enterprises must improve their exporting efforts and compete in international markets. Other European regions also share this problem and there is, therefore, a need to diversify stone products and improve the skills of people working in this sector.

The main objective of this project is to promote cooperation on what is needed in terms of skills and training needs. A second objective is to develop a European dimension in training and vocational guidance. The partners will undertake the following activities : study of stone products, materials, tools, machinery and techniques; analysis of the national and international trade in stone blocks and transformed stone materials; review of current training curricula; production of a training needs report; design of new vocational training curricula; creation of a database with information on stone/granite products and trade; and production of a CD-ROM, a video and a training book.

Impact
The project will enable the partners to acquire knowledge that will bring training into line with the realities of the sector and its future needs.
