Objective
The experience of the partners in this project so far has identified the need to improve the organisation of placements for students undertaking overseas work experience that is relevant to their international trade or business administration training course. There is a need to ensure that students and their placement companies are well-matched in order to maximise the value to all concerned. Particular attention needs to be paid to the preparation of placements.
There will be an initial workshop/conference to disseminate existing materials and the results of previous projects in this area. The partners will then undertake research into what SMEs require of students, and what students and training providers want to get out of placements. Three training packages will be produced : the first to help SME supervisors/instructors manage and assess students; the second to help tutors with pre-placement preparation; and the third to enable students to use their work placement experience effectively. Other products will include a database of SMEs willing to offer placement opportunities, and an assessment package for students on placement overseas.
Impact
Training providers will be able to better counsel their students, and include the results of the research into future programmes. SMEs will benefit from improvements in the quality of the work undertaken by students on placement. Students will have a greater chance of undertaking a placement that is relevant to their future career.
