Objective
Tourism - in all its forms - is a major source of activity in may European countries and there is a need to ensure that employees and personnel have skills to meet new demands: different approaches to service provision and increasing numbers of tourists with higher levels of expectation. This project aims to address these needs through the development and testing of training programmes designed to give students and employees in the industry the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills for meeting the challenge of the changing market.
Following a needs analysis, partners, in cooperation with the industry, will prepare modules focusing on areas such as the changing professional environment, new forms of tourism, new technology and professional practice, safety measures, customer services, cross-cultural understanding and personal skills. The modules will be tested and evaluated with groups of students in partner countries using, as a learning tool, the Finnish UN Associations' Challenge to Global Citizenship, a programme designed to promote understanding of the concept of hospitality and tourism in foreign cultures. The association will award certificates to students satisfying the programme requirements. The finalised version will be adapted for use with workers in the industry and with unemployed people as a means to updating knowledge and skills and remaining competitive in the international labour market.
Impact
The project will lead to enhanced vocational training, improve employment prospects and promote transnational mobility within the industry.
