Objective
The project is placed within the broad context of the under-representation of black and minority ethnic groups within the social professions, particularly within the European context. At the same time these groups find themselves over-represented as clients of social work.
This project aims to: open up a debate among social work educators on racism, marginalisation and exclusion in Europe and its impact upon trainee social workers from black and minority ethnic groups; identify and discuss different approaches and theoretical frameworks for looking at and challenging racism and other forms of oppression and to provide a model(s) for practice; identify, compare and develop appropriate access, training and support structures for black and minority ethnic students among academic partners and associated agencies; improve the knowledge, expertise and skills of trainers/educators and practitioners with regard to the concepts of anti-racist and anti-oppressive practice and how this fits with 'integration policy'; draw up an equal opportunity policy and framework for use by partners in the Socrates/Tempus network for European students mobility and work placements in agencies; train social professionals and prepare them to work in and for a multi-cultural and multi-racial society; and disseminate and transfer the results of the project to a wider audience.
Impact
The project is expected to impact on training and education programmes in social work, leading to the development of new theoretical and practice frameworks and modules regarding anti-racism and oppression.
