Ecological Structure and Functioning of the Cambrian Radiation

Objective

The research program aSEcological Structure and Functioning of the Cambrian Radiationa (ESFCR) is aimed at achieving a better understanding of the structure (at the population, community and ecosystem levels) and functioning (life habits, species interactions and trophic relationships) of the first complex bentho-pelagic marine ecosystems derived from the Cambrian radiation. This project will encompass the study of three fossil deposits exceptional for the preservation, abundance and diversity of organisms: Chengjiang (Lower Cambrian, China), Kaili (Middle Cambrian, China) and the Burgess Shale (Middle Cambrian, Canada).
Objectives:
1-To better understand the structure and function of the Chengjiang biota with a main focus on how the community was influenced by ecological and environmental controls.
2-To test whether the ecological structure of the Cambrian radiation was variable through space and time.
3-To test whether the structure and function of Cambrian and Recent ecosystems are fundamentally different or similar.
Methodology:
1-To conduct field work in China, collecting samples of fossil assemblages with high stratigraphic resolution.
2-To use variations in abundance and diversity of species as proxies of community changes, and variations in geochemical data as proxies of environmental changes.
3-To evaluate differences in community patterns, and the influence of environmental factors on the distribution of species by using quantitative methods.
4-To compare qualitative and quantitative patterns with those in modern ecosystems.
Relevance of this project to the objectives of the community:
1-To integrate a multi-national research program.
2-To increase the mobility and international co-operation of researchers.
3-To develop interdisciplinary research programs.
4-To promote scientific excellence by publishing in top scientific journals.
5-To reduce the impact of the European brain drain by the possible creation of a permanent research positio...

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
