Objective
Aircraft engine nacelles make a significant contribution to the skin friction drag of aircraft and as such are an attractive candidate for the application of drag reducing laminar flow technology. At the beginning of 1993 two European, EC supported collaborative programmes were launched in order to pursue laminar flow aircraft technology; The European Laminar Flow Investigation (ELFIN II) and Laminar Flow Research Action (LARA). Both programmes include significant tasks concerned with engine nacelle drag reduction.
The global objective of the tasks is to design, using the combined resources and computational fluid dynamic codes of the partners, a viable optimum laminar flow nacelle, and validate this design using wind tunnel tests.
LARA is an 18 month programme which will evaluate nacelle low speed off design performance.
