IMPROVEMENT OF SUNFLOWER DEHULLING CAPACITY

Exploitable results

A small laboratory dehulling system was set up for measuring dehulling ability of seeds, with two aims: breeding: the fast comparison of different cultivars; technological: the forecast of dehulling ability for commercial samples. A standardised method has been developed for quickly measuring the dehulling ability of small seed samples. It has been clearly proven that it is possible to introduce dehulling ability character in a breeding scheme and genetic material can be put at the disposal of breeders. Environmental conditions have to be taken into consideration for dehulling ability, but the genetic effects always predominate over environmental conditions. Drying technology is improving dehulling ability, and significant progress can be expected from overheated steam drying. On this basis, a new dehulling-sorting flowsheet has been designed. An economic approach to dehulling has been adopted. Although this project ends in an economic context not favourable for dehulling (low energy prices, high oil prices, low soybean meal prices), this technology appears to contribute to maintaining or even increasing the competitivity of sunflower meal.
