FAT DEPOSITION IN FARMED RAINBOW TROUT AND EUROPEAN SEA BASS : NUTRITIONAL CONTROL AND GENE EXPRESSION OF LIPOGENIC ENZYMES

Objective

The proposed project aims to understand how dietary factors control and modify fat synthesis and deposition in two major finfish species : the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) The candidate species have been retained because of:
a) the recognized differences between them in terms of lipid nutrition (essential fatty acid requirements, bioconversion potential, tolerance to dietary fats),
b) their economic importance within the EU and
c) the different environmental implications (salinity, types of cultural practices, water requirements).

Two specific studies will be undertaken for each species in order to understand the effects of:
a) modifications of dietary digestible protein to digestible energy (DP/DE) ratios and
b) variations in dietary protein quality. To analyze such effects, an interdisciplinary approach involving the use of biochemical and metabolic methods of conventional nutrition substantiated by tools form molecular biology will be applied.
