NEW RADIOTRACERS AND METHODS OF QUALITY ASSURANCE FOR NUCLEAR MEDICINE APPLICATION

Objective

Nuclear medicine diagnostic-procedures are highly dependent on the availability, quality and safety of labelled compounds. The principle objectives of this Action are :

to develop new radiotracers for nuclear medicine application;
to synthesise precursor molecules suitable for labelling with SPET and PET nuclides;
to develop suitable labelling methods for routine production of radiotracers;
to perform preclinical studies of the new radiotracers;
to provide pharmaceutical standards of preparation as well as methods of quality assurance in order to provide for safe application of the radiotracers;
to perform clinical collaboration studies between the participating countries.

Current status
Working Groups
The Management Committee has identified five areas of research and has set up the following working groups :

Working Group 1
Quality control of 99mTc Radiopharmaceuticals - Co-ordinator : F. Rakias (H)
Standardisation of radio-iodinated pharmaceuticals - Co-ordinator : J. Mertens (B)
Working Group 2
Brain neurotransmission radiotracers - Co-ordinator : P.A. Schubiger (CH)

Working Group 3
Cardiac neurotransmission radiotracers - Co-ordinator : C. Halldin (S)

Working Group 4
Enzyme inhibitors as radiotracers (Metyrapone) - Co-ordinator : I. Zolle (A)

Working Group 5
New chelating systems for Tc and Re for medical application - Co-ordinator : H. Spies (D).

A programme for establishing a new working group "Radiolabelled peptides for imaging and therapy" is proposed, and the Management Committee will make a final decision about it at its next meeting in February 1997.

Short-Term Scientific Missions
Eighteen Short-Term Scientific Missions were approved and carried out in 1995 and 1996.

Contracts
National Institute of Pharmacy, Budapest (H) : Preparation of handbook "Evaluation of quality control methods of 99mTc radiopharmaceuticals in nuclear medicine".
Vrije Universiteit, Brussels (B) : Preparation of "Compendium of radio-iodination reactions and radio-iodinated pharmaceuticals".
Work planned
The main activities for the remaining year will be dedicated to the finalisation of the compendia on quality control of Technetium compounds and Iodination procedures (WG 1). The metyrapone work should also be concluded (WG 4). The Working Groups 2 and 3 (Brain and Heart) will assess the investigated compounds and elucidate a programme for a prolongation. The latest Group (WG 5) will try to reach a first milestone in the comparison of different Tc-labelling approaches.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
