GENE TRANSFER BETWEEN SOIL BACTERIA, AS MONITORED BY NOVEL TECHNIQUES IN MODEL ECOSYSTEMS

Objective

For the purpose of increasing the safety of the use of genetically manipulated microorganisms (GEMs) to be released to the environment, a suicide containment system has been developed which will limit the survival of the bacteria after release. This is a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) cassette comprising a gene encoding a cell killing function and a region controlling the expression of the gene. The small suicide protein encoded by the gene interferes with an essential bacterial function and cell death is induced minutes after over expression of the gene.
