Objective
THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDIES IS TO ACQUIRE BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE TRANSURANIC ELEMENTS, IN PARTICULAR AMERICIUM, AND OF THEIR UPTAKE BY ORGANISMS IN THE BIOTOPES SPECIFIC TO BRACKISH WATER.
The concept of concentration factor for actinides has been reexamined and the term has been redefined taking into consideration the physical chemical states of these radioelements.
THE BIOLOGISCHE ANSTALT HELGOLAND (HELIGOLAND BIOLOGICAL INSTITUTE) WILL CARRY OUT EACH OF THE FOLLOWING PROJECTS:
DEVELOPMENT AND OPTIMIZATION OF SUITABLE METHODS OF SPECIATION ANALYSIS.
AM SPECIES, DISSOLVED AND ASSOCIATED WITH SUSPENDED PARTICULATE MATTER, WILL BE INVESTIGATED, THE STUDIES COVERING COMPLEX FORMATION, COMPETITION WITH OTHER METAL IONS, COLLOID FORMATION AND SORPTION. ALTERATIONS IN THE BRACKISH-WATER MEDIA WILL BE ACHIEVED BY ADDING OR REDUCING INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS. THE FOLLOWING PARAMETERS WILL BE VARIED: PH VALUE, SALT CONTENT, POSSIBLE COMPETITIVE METAL IONS, COLLOID-FORMING METAL IONS, DOC AND COMPLEXING AGENTS, ORGANIC CHELATING AGENTS, REDOX POTENTIAL, PARTICLE CONTENT AND ITS COMPOSITION.
THE MANNER IN WHICH THE IDENTIFIABLE DISSOLVED, COLLOID OR PARTICULATE SPECIES INFLUENCE BIOLOGICAL AVAILABILITY AND THE EXTENT AND RATE OF UPTAKE WILL BE DETERMINED. THE MECHANISMS OF BONDING TO THE EXOSKELETON IS ALSO OF INTEREST; ION EXCHANGE, CHELATE FORMATION OF SORPTION OF PARTICLES COULD BE INVOLVED, AND DIFFUSION CAN ALSO BE A FACTOR.
AN ATTEMPT WILL BE MADE TO DISCOVER WHAT THE EFFECTS OF VARYING BIOLOGICAL AVAILABILITY OF THE SPECIES ARE UNDER THE CONDITIONS SPECIFIC TO AN ESTUARY, THEREBY DETERMINING WHAT CONSEQUENCES FOR AM DISTRIBUTION RESULT FROM THE TRANSPORT AND MIXING PROCESSES (E.G. ADSORPTION - DESORPTION, COMPLEXING - DECOMPLEXING).

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
