Proposal for the Development of an Automated Protein Crystallization Device

Objective

The time consuming crystallization process is identified as a seriuos bottleneck in the path to protein and macromolecule structure determination using X-ray diffraction. The project aims to develop techniques and prototype machinery to allow the rapid determination of crystallization conditions of arbitrary macromolecules. The principal emphasis is on developing computer controlled liquid handling methods which are typically 30 times faster than current manual techniques, and which consequently allow more powerful experimental design. Hence a second aspect of the project is concerned with establishing the procedures whereby the user can guide the automatic generation of new crystallization experiments, in conjunction with computational analysis of past results.
