Developing improved methods for the genetic identification and disease screening of transgenic animals using PCR, LCR and other techniques

Objective

This project is intended to use the combined facilities and expertise of the primary SMEs and potentially three associated research institutions to develop new PCR/LCR and possibly other techniques for the more rapid and accurate genetic identification and disease screening of strains of transgenic animals using DNA analysis. The eventual field testing and development phase may result in the production of diagnostic kits potentially applicable to all laboratory animals but with the initial aim of making it possible for routine screening laboratories to use such techniques to speed up and improve international exchange of transgenic animals. The extension of such techniques to farm animals will also be investigated.
