Novel antithrombotic agents

Objective

The aim of this project is the identification, production and development of novel anti-thrombotic which may be used with broader efficacy over existing entithrombotic agents. This area is of great industrial/economic/social interest because disorders in the coagulation processes are the main cause of mortality in industrialized countries and because presently commercialized anti-thrombotic suffer of sever limitations for therapeutic applications. This area is also particularly interesting for small-medium size companies because it offers the possibility to present to the market novel products based on novel mechanisms of action. The present project concerns, as first part, the production of pure forms of new hirudins from different origins. Their potential use as anticoagulant agents will also be evaluated. The second part of the program is in line with the objectives of the program "Structural biology - area 6.1.3 structure function relationship" because the discovery and refinement of new biochemical entities with desired functions is the scope of the scientific program.
