INDUSTRIAL PROCESS HEAT PRODUCTION BY BURNING FLUFF RDF FROM HOUSEHOLD WASTE

Objective

The aim of the project is to provide process steam to a factory by burning fluff RDF in a watercooled grave boiler. The net energy produced amounts to 8600 TOE/yr while the payback time amounts to 12 years. The burning of almost 100 % urban fluff RDF is innovatory.

5. 6 t/h of fluff RDF coming from the residues of two urban waste composting plants will be burnt as the main fuel during 7 500 h/yr in a watercooled mobile grate furnace. This fluff RDF will cover 90 % of the fuel needs. Additional fuel could be commercial waste similar to RDF.
The furnace is fitted with combustion air preheating, flue gas recycling, and accurate combustion air distribution (three primary and three secondary independent combustion air blowing).
The combustion gases will stay at least 2 seconds at 850 deg. C in the furnace before being cooled down to 250 deg. C in the boiler itself and afterwards to 200 deg. C in an economiser.
The boiler with a 75 % yield will produce 40 GJ/h during 7 500 h/yr as process steam at 22 bar and 180 deg. C for the car factory of Ford Genk, Belgium.
The flue gas treatment consists of three parts: prededusting in a monocyclone, reaction with chalk for acidity abatement and final dedusting in a fabric filter. The dust output will amountto a max . of 50 mg/Nm3 while the mean max. value for HCl output will be 50 mg/Nm3.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
