PRODUCTION OF HEAT FROM COMBUSTION OF SUPERMARKET WASTE AND ENERGY SAVING USING A CENTRAL MONITORING UNIT

Objective

To burn supermarket waste, such as paper, wood, straw, packaging materials, and to produce energy by combustion of wastes in a boiler of 500,000 kcal/h power controlled by an energy saving central processing unit (siclimat) together with three existing fuel-fired boilers.
Innovative aspects relate to the combined use of waste-fired boiler and a central energy saving management and control system.
The results of the project are positif, also if the installation has been used only partially. The payback period has been calculated is 6.5 years.
The project is conducted in a commercial center, which is already equipped with 3 oil-fired units: one hot water boiler (250,000 kcal/h) for summer service and two other boilers (1,000,000 kcal/h) for winter service. One of the latter is replaced by a waste-fired unit of 500,000 kcal/h throughout the year. The management of this system requires supervision of the equipment, its safety and economy. These tasks have been automated in this project; the operating conditions of the system are followed-up in real time and a centralized management system has been set-up for: - the use of the boilers in cascade, with the waste-fired boiler in priority operation, the oil-fired boilers in stand-by or in support.
The program is managed as a function of outside temperature, initial temperature, insolation and total load, to provide the requested heat at all times. - the optimization and control of the various energy consuming equipments as a function of the same parameters, so that peaks areshaven.
- time schedule for the operation of cyclic equipment
The waste-fired boiler is composed of :
- a water cooled waste storage chamber, in which the waste is also ignited and gasified in downdraft - a water cooled and refractory-lined combustion chamber
- post-combustion chamber, with independent supply of secondary air
- heat exchanger with vertical flues
- a multicyclone and an I.D.-fan
Annual energy production through combustion of supermarket waste is 96 TOE, the power savings are 71 TOE, the fuel savings are 16.8 TOE.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
