ENERGY PRODUCTION BY FLUIDIZED BED COMBUSTION OF NON-RECYCLED SOLIDS FROM AN INTEGRATED URBAN SOLID WASTE TREATMENT PLANT

Objective

To demonstrate the ROWITEC/TIF technology with R.D.F. from European Urban Wastes, and more specifically from Mediterranean ones, and to check on the advantages which, fluidized bed incinerators are reported to have compared with the traditional types of furnaces.
The most important advantages are :
- Design simplicity and less furnace surface area required.
- Good availability to burn heterogeneous wastes at high calorific value.
- Good thermal efficiency.
- Good environmental standards as partial neutralisation of acid gases
occurs in the bed itself when lime or dolomite is added.
- Lower operating and maintenance costs.
- Clean dry slag

General
It consists of an Integrated Solid Urban Waste Trreatment Plant, for the City of Madrid, comprised of a Recycling Plant, Classification and Compost, and Refuse Inicneration with Power generation, with a treatment capacity of 1,200 T./day.
The unit must fulfil European environmental legislation so that there are no emissions above those permitted by current regulations.
Recycling Plant, Classification and Compost
Municipal waste is received from collection trucks which unload in storage and regulation pits with a 2 day capacity.
A independent lines leave there which have a capacity of 25 T./hr., where te bags are broken open, or classification takes place by size and automatic and manual separation of the sub-products; glass, as well as final refuse, whic is sent to the pit which feeds the incinerator.
The organic material undergoes aerobic fermentation for a period of 6/8 weeks, after which it is submitted to a refining process to remove the inert elements which are sent to the tip or the incinerator, and the rest is good quality clean, fermented compost.
Its treatment capcity is 600 T./6.5 hr./ay shift and an estimated amount of 860,ooo T./year are to be treated.
Incineration Plant
The refuse from the Recycling Plant has increased higher heating value, as the rganic material and a large part of the humidity have been eliminated.
The main Incinerator Plant Data are ss follows :
- Three 200 T./day, 8.4 T./hr independent incineration lines
- Working timetabe : 24 hrs/day, 7 days a week.
- Working days guaranteed : 100 days x 600 T./day = 186,000 T./year.
The incineration process chosen is ROWITEC/TIF fluidized bed, whose main characteristic is its ability of almost complete incineration of high calorific value waste.
The process consists of fed chules, continuous feeding screws, fkuidized bed furnace with combustion chamber, boiler, gas leaning system, induced draft ventilators, chimney and turbogenerator.
There are also the auxiliary electical, boiler water treatment, compressed air, instrumentation and control, etc., services.
The thermal process design has been carried out for a line treatment of 200 T/day of fuel with a 3,5500 +/- 2000% kcal/kg. calorific value.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
