EVAPORATOR CONDENSATES METHANISATION

Objetivo

To produce biogas from the polluting effluents of wood processing by use of an anaerobic filter process.
The experience gained from numerous tests aimed at obtaining significant results has enabled us to acquire proper mastery of anaerobic treatment of our condensates :
* Limitation of the content in toxics such as NH3 or S02,
* Addition of bio-assimilable and well quantified trace elements,
* Essential continuous addition of whey,
* Elimination of irregularities by a regular, rarely interrupted input (buffer tank) and with a constant load in COD (TOC analyser),
* Acquisition of tracer test techniques.
Although still short of the initial objectives, the current performance of our reactor has reached a very significant level for the depollution of the Plant, with a good regularity of operation. This depollution technique is surely transposable to the treatment of other effluents of the chemical industry.
Apart from the neutralization costs to a pH of 5.5 - more related to the facility - the energy savings offset the cost of the additives. No other type of treatment in depollution generally reaches this cost price balance. The anaerobic treatment of a particular effluent, relatively loaded (6 to 7 g/l of COD), highly biodegradable, with a flow rate of approximately one hundred m3 per hour, is therefore a worthwhile method if compared to other processes.
The simplicity of control from a central station (with minimal presence on site) and the low formation of suspended solids are additional advantages. Lastly, the complementary and the synergy with an already existing aerobic treatment were clearly evidenced within the framework of our TARTAS Plant and constitute another essential asset.
The evaporation condensates from wood cooking spent liquors (mainly composed of acetic acid, methanol, furfural and sulfur dioxide) are suitable for methanic fermentation.
Biological action within a packed anaerobic reactor developed by "AIR LIQUIDE" reduces the organic materials to methane gas (0.32 m3 CH4/Kg COD removed) which is used directly as a boiler fuel for the production of steam in the pulp mill.
A considerable decrease in pollution is expected from this process.
