Objective
To prove the technical and economic feasibility of fuel oil substitution by the burning of fuels with low calorific value especially RDF in a microprocessor controlled omnifuel boiler. To control the practical results obtained by filtering flue gases with a dry gasfilter.
Several possible feedstocks were evaluated in the framework of the project including pelletized RDF, fluff RDF, industrial waste (cardboard and paper), lignite and coal. With some types of fluff RDF feeding problems were encountered due to blockage of the feeding system by bundles of plastics and due to large granulometry of the coal. Based on the performance measurements, it was concluded that the best combustible for the boiler would be lignite or a mixture of RDF and industrial waste from the factory itself. Dry scrubbing of the flue gases was evaluated by injection of lime and natrium-bicarbonate. Acceptable emissions of pollutants were measured.
Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) of +/- 38 % moisture content and 2,200 Kcal/kg. calorific value will be burned at the rate of 12,000 toe/yr in a 9,000,000 Kcal/h new microprocessor controlled boiler which is able to burn different kinds of low grade fuel (RDF, paper waste, low grade coal and waste wood) with a yield of 75 %. The boiler is a water tube type, with a water-cooled grate divided into three parts with separate combustion air blowing.
To neutralize chlorine and sulphur compounds, chalk is added to the flue gases before filtering in a dry Teflon fibre filter.
The boiler will produce +/- 12,500 kg/h of 10 bar steam for paper mill, saving +/- 4,000 toe/yr of heavy fuel oil.
