COMPOSTING HEAT PLANT AS AN ELEMENT OF AN INTEGRATED MANURE TREATMENT SYSTEM

The raw material for this project will include daily 300 tons liquid and 40 tons solid manure. The liquid manure, transported by tank lorries, will be stored in a 1 500 m3 storage tank from which it will be piped through a counter flow heat exchanger (fed with warm liquid effluent) where its temperature will be raised to 35 C to a 2 stage biogas plant (not part of this demonstration project) including two reactors in series, the first one mesophilic (35 C) of 500 m3 volume and the second one thermophilic (55 C) for sanitizing purposes. The process heat for the digesters will originate from the composting heat plant.
The digested effluent will be separated in a series of 6 strainer centrifuges, with each a capacity of 4-6 m3 per hour, in a fibrous part (15 % of the original volume with 22 % total solids) and a liquid effluent (85 % of the original volume).
The liquid effluent will go via the heat exchanger to a 3 000 m3 water-hyacinth hot -house, including a 2 000 m3 pool. Evaporating energy will be recovered by a heat exchanger and reused to heat the hot house. In case of need, reverse osmosis may be used to maintain the nutrient equilibrium in the pool by removing excess nutrients.
The solid manure, transported by lorries, will be stored in a pit where it will be mixed with the fibrous part of the digested effluent.
40 tons per day of the composting mixture will be loaded in the composting heat plant in a 320 m3 rectangular tank where it will be mechanically structured, and aerated and moisted in such a way as to maintain the optimum 60-70 C temperature during 5 days.
The raw compost will have a higher content in NP and K as the original material and part of it will be used as a farmyard manure. The remaining will be ripened in heaps in open air for 3-4 weeks and 12 tons at 50 % total solids per day will be available for sale as compost.
Heat, as 60 C water, from the compost process will be recovered to be used as process heat for heating both digesters.Air scavengers will prevent odor problems.
Various parameters will be measured to assess energy, nutrient and mass balances in view of an optimization of the system and to be able to foresee events.
Based on a 20 year lifetime, the net energy output of the integrated compost heat plant is 1 600 toe per year. In the Danish energy-price context, the expected payback time is 9 years.
