ENERGY COGENERATION INNOVATIVE PLANT BY "STAGE" COMBUSTION IN FLUIDIZED BED OF RDF AND SLUDGES

Objective

The aim of the project is the design, erection and trial run of an industrial (large-scale) plant for the utilization of energy from Municipal Solid Waste. The plant will produce both electrical energy and district heating based upon the following technologies :
- Fluidized bed incineration by "stage" combustion process and flue gas post-combustion (in physically separated zone as required by the Italian law September 10, 1982. n. 915 comma 4) of mixtures of RDF and sludges coming from the combustible fraction used for the RDF production.
- Thermal recovery (with partial cooling during combustion) by the flue-gas cooling with superheated steam production and its use in a cogenerative "RANKINE" thermal cycle".

The proposed project will be a section of complex plant to treat and dispose the MSW collected in the city of Verona (Italy) and in the surrounding area, with a total capacity of 500 t/d of MSW.
The whole plant will consist of the following sections, to be realized in different steps :
- A MSW sorting section to separate the organic fraction and to produce RDF (pelletized or densified depending from the different needs of seasonal storage).
- An anaerobic digestion of the organic fraction, sorted in the above section, with production of biogas, to be utilized in "OTTO" cycle cogenerative engines, and dewatering of the sludges coming out from the digesters.
- A cogenerative section by the combustion of RDF and sludges coming from the above plant sections.
The here described innovative project will be the above last section of the plant and particularly it will be designed to maximize the energy recovery (both as thermal and electric energy) as well as to be applicable to differentmixtures of waste fuels like :
- Pelletized RDF (L.H.V.= 16.000 ./. 17.000 kj/kg)
- Fluff RDF (L.H.V. = 14.000 ./. 15.000 kj/kg)
- Dried sewage sludges (90% s.s.)
- Dried sludges (from 24% up to 90% s.s.) coming from the MSW organic fraction anaerobic digestion.
In order to meet the above scope, the project will consist of the design and erection of two parallel lines each including :
- One "stage" combustion fluidized bed furnace complete of flue-gas after-combustion chamber
- One heat recovery boiler to cool the flue-gas coming out from the after-combustion
- One flue-gas treatment system to reduce the pollutants.
The project will be complete by one "RANKINE" cycle with cogenerative turbogenerator set common to both lines.
To permit the complete evaluation of the plant performance and the appraisal of the results coming from the innovative content of proposed project, the project itself will be completed by a measurement and data analysis phase.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
