European cardiothoracic surgery registry

Objective

To set up a European Registry for cardiac surgical procedures
To set up a Central Processing Unit (CPU) for the receipt, validation and processing of demographic, activity and outcome data for-adult cardiac surgical patients operated on in European cardiac surgical units.

The content of the project is as follows:

Phase 1: (01-12 months)

- Production of the Minimum Data Set (MDS) to be used by all participating centres.
- Establishing the Central Processing Unit (CPU)
- Appoint Data Manager for the CPU
- Publicise via EACTS the European Registry
- Liaise with main computer software suppliers to ensure compatibility of CPU with data transferred from participating countries/centres
- Appoint and train Data Entry Clerks (x2)

Phase 2: (13-36 months)

- Begin data entry/validation
- Report for months 13-24 to EACTS + participating centres
- Expand MDS to include risk stratification
- Report for months 25-36 to EACTS + participating centres
- Prepare final evaluation report/recommendations for future development

The proposal recognises the existing national database initiatives which exist in some European countries in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. A pan- European database would bring these initiatives together and would encourage much wider collaboration of participating centres.

This proposal is submitted under the co-ordinating name of Professor Ken Taylor who is the Chairman of the EACTS Database Sub-committee. The project has the full support of the Council of the EACTS.
