Use of normal dental records longitudinally as novel indicators of oral health and well-being of Europeans

Objective

-To create a new longitudinal European system for oral health assessment and to test it at population levels in different countries.
- To determine the survival curves of each individual permanent tooth and tooth surfaces.
- To determine the effect of geographical latitude, different preventive dental care measures etc. on oral health.

Because dental caries is one of those few chronic infectious diseases which still concern nearly all children and adolescents in Europe, most EU countries have created dental care systems in schools. Most of these systems include annual examinations and treatment by dentists. Frequent examinations make it possible to use scientifically the oral health data contained in the files of public dental health care system or private dentists for the longitudinal assessment of oral health. Detailed longitudinal retrospective analyses have not been performed internationally, although this data bank serves as a unique source of information for careful oral health analysis. A new system developed for this purpose harmonizes the recording methods used in different EU countries.

A new longitudinal system by standardized new computer technology is novel in the sense that the special features of the development and destruction of dentition allow analysis of certain environmental, demographic, and socio-economic health factors as well as the efficacy of different primary health care systems. An evaluation of the effectiveness of different preventive strategies, including health education in the member states, can form the basis of efficient oral health strategies. A special emphasis is laid to the fact that in the prevalence of dental caries in youngsters there is a south-north trend so that the situation is worse in the north.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
