Decision-making after prenatal diagnosis of a fetal abnormality: describing the present to improve the future

Objective

To describe decision-making after the diagnosis of a fetal abnormality in nine regions across six Member States, and to document the influence of individual, social and organisational factors. The results will be used to determine how services should best be provided to ensure informed decision-making. Given the relative rarity of prenatal diagnoses and the range of service models across Member States, this objective is most effectively realised by research at the European level.
The proposed concerted action is novel in approaching on of the most difficult yet critical aspects of providing prenatal diagnostic services: decision-making after the detection of the fetal abnormality. The results will provide a sound empirical base upon which to develop ethical guidelines for the delivery of prenatal diagnostic services across Europe, from which to foster best practice respecting the values in different Member Sates, and supporting women's rights to good information as the basis for well-informed decisions.
