Objective
The pentraxin group of proteins includes acute phase reactants and is synthesised by cytokine stimulated cells; pentraxin possess pentameric structure (hence the name) and lectin-like three dimensional structure. The best known representatives of this family are C-reactive protein and serum amyloid component. Both of them are produced by IL-6 induced hepatocytes. CRP plays a time honored role as marker of inflammation infection organ damage and according to recent data impending ischemic heart disease. The APR biological function is still undefined, but presumably of relevance if one consider that these proteins are very well conceived in evolution from hose-shoe crab to humans. Recent work has lead to identify a new family of pentraxin related proteins which have been termed "long pentraxins" and are produced chiefly by endothelial cells in response to inflammatory mediators such as IBETA but not to IL-6. The prototype molecule of this group PIX 3 has been isolated and characterised by the joint effort of a few European research groups (Brevario et al J. Biol. Chem 1992.) The board objectives of the present project is to explore the feasibility of a collaborative European work aimed to better defining the exploitation of nex pentraxin as diagnostic and therapeutic tools.
