Development of a metacarpo-phalangeal joint prosthesis

Objective

Rheumatic alterations of the joints in the hand is one of the main reasons for limited mobility and functional loss of the joints in the hand. The affected joints lead to serious disability throughout Europe. Surgical replacement of the affected jont by a prosthetic joint can restore its natural function and mobility. Up to the present there is no adequeatly fucntioning metacarpo-phalangeal joint prosthesis available to the medical community to remedy this problem. The objective of this project is to develop a metacarpo-phalangeal joint prosthesis that allows a natural mobility and fuction of the hand and has a lifetime of at least ten years. To optimize durability and fuction of the prosthesis recent scientific results for adequete fixation of the prosthesis and newly developed techniques to reduce wear of the artificial joint sufaces will be applied
