Which nutritional and lifestyle factors contribute to health protection in elderly Europeans followed through ages 70-85?

Objective

Objectives:
Identify in 8 European countries (B. DK. F, I, NL, P, E, CH) dietary and lifestyle factors important for survival and the maintenance of health of people who started to participate in the SENECA study in 1988 at ages 70-75.

Background:
Dietary and lifestyle factors have been shown important for the maintenance of health and the prevention of disease in adults. The importance of these factors for people who survive into ages over 70 in different cultural and socio-economic settings has yet to be assessed. In this respect an in depth analysis of health and survival of the SENECA population - a European elderly population aged 80 to 85, whose diet, lifestyle and health have been studied longitudinally over the past decade - will provide unique information on health potentials of diet and lifestyle factors in this age group.

Objective:
Identify in 8 European countries (B, DK, F, I, NL, P, E, CH) dietary and lifestyle factors important for survival and the maintenance of health of people who started to participate in the SENECA study in 1988 at ages 70-75.

Design:Survival and health follow-up in 1998 of 2040 SENECA participants who were enrolled in the SENECA study in 1988.Methods:Collection of mortality and health data (by home visits and contacts with local authorities and registries):- mortality: date of death and cause of death- health: disease, use of medicines, self perceived health, physical performance, Mini Mental State Examination (dementia), Geriatric Depression Scale, impairments, ability to perform activities of daily living, body weight, (blood biochemistries :optional)Assess the prognostic value of- initial (1988) dietary intake measures (food, energy and specific nutrients)- initial (1988) indicators of nutritional and health status (body weight, blood vitamins/lipoproteins/proteins, haematology)- initial (1988) lifestyle factors (physical activity, smoking, social interactions) and socio-economic conditions (budgets)- Longitudinal changes in the above mentioned factors over the first four years of follow-up,for- survival in 1998- the pattern of change in health and disease indicators over a 10-y period- the maintenance of health.

Relevance: The study is important for developing preventive strategies aiming at the maintenance of health at old age.02 02
