Objective
Brief Description
The project fits fundamentally into a European perspective. Showing the possible differences in medical ethics as influenced by cultures and health systems, it aims to promote common criteria for reflection, in order to contribute to a European framework which respects its philosophical, religious and cultural diversity.
The project consists of one workshop each year for three years. It will be concluded by a collective report. The report will include: recommendations about possible organisational and/or legal measures to be taken in order to stimulate the practical involvement of ethics in hospital practice; and perspectives on the systematisation of such research at a European level.

The project "Ethical function in Hospital Ethics Committees" has for general purpose to stimulate the ethical activity in the hospital practice in Europe.
To reach this purpose, some intermediary objectives have been designed:
1) a heuristic objective: to make a comparative analysis of the ethical activity in the hospitals. The anchorage of the analysis is in the hospital ethics committees, whatever being their form, but taking into account both their care for the ethics of research and of clinics. Their activity will be evaluated: what kind of normatively do they produce: administrative, professional, or truly ethical? How does this orientation of the activity correlate with the dominant procedures of decision-making in the hospital? What is the effectuation of ethics in the hospital practice?
2) an objective of synergy in reflection and research: the project aims at implementing an European network of permanent reflexion about ethics in the hospital, as close as possible of the practice. Its support comes from the experience and competence of sociologists, jurists, physicians philosophers, psychoanalysts, members of national or hospital committees, institutes of bioethics, research centres. The project fits fundamentally into a European perspective. Showing the possible differences in medical ethics as influenced by the cultures and the health systems, it aims at promoting common criterias for the reflection, in order to cooperate to an European building which cares and respects its philosophical, religious and cultural diversity. The "concerted action" consists in organizing one workshop each year during three years. It will be concluded by a collective report.
This report will include: 1) recommendations about possible organisational and/or legal measures to be taken in order to stimulate practical involvement of ethics in the hospital practice; 2) perspectives of systematisation of the research at the European level.
