Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation The European risk score initiative

Objective

Objectives
The goal of the SCORE project is to ensure that coronary heart disease risk assessment in clinical practice in Europe accords with the available data on coronary risk in European countries. This entails the following objectives:
* assembling a pool of databases from major European studies of coronary risk;
* developing a coronary risk assessment system based on these databases;
* if necessary, producing specific systems for different European regions;
* integrating these results into the revised European Guidelines on Coronary Prevention.

Brief Description
The present European recommendations on coronary risk management in clinical practice rely on a risk assessment system based on US data. This project will make use of major European databases of cardiac risk factors and disease incidence. These represent a wealth of barely-exploited data which could serve as a basis for the accurate estimation of risk in European populations. The SCORE project will assemble large-scale European databases, and use these to construct a simple, easily used risk assessment system. Because levels of coronary risk differ throughout Europe, the system will be calibrated against a spectrum of European populations.
The project will also use cross-sectional data to estimate the health service impact of the systematic use of the risk assessment system in clinical practice, within the framework of the European Guidelines. This analysis will facilitate health service planning in relation to coronary prevention in clinical practice.
The project will take place over three years, and will make use of a range of recently-developed statistical techniques to ensure optimum risk assessment. The results will be disseminated as a set of simple, easy-to-use physician guidelines. They will also be disseminated on the World Wide Web in a format that can be browsed using freely-available free computer software.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
