Objective
Objectives:
In this proposal, four groups with longstanding interest in immune responses to haptens will combine their efforts to better understand the development of occupational allergies to understand crossreactivities on a molecular level and to generate rules to avoid sensitizations against these compounds.
The goal of this study is to define criteria responsible for the development of occupational allergies and to provide concepts to prevent these allergies.
Brief descriptions:
Allergies to low molecular weight compounds are of major public and occupational importance in certain professions like i.e. pharmaceutical industries (drug production), construction workers (chromium), or hair dressers (p-phenylendiamine). These studies include the characterisation of cytochrome P450 isoenzymes in antigen presenting cells.
Since several occupational allergens exhibit a widespread distribution extending far above the occupational environment and since crossreactive compounds may also trigger the disease, sensitizations against these allergens may have an impact on the extraoccupational life of the sensitized individuals. This may result in the perpetuation of a particular allergy even after discontinuation of the occupation. A better understanding of crossreactivities to other compounds may thus be essential for the avoidance of these allergenic compounds.
Keywords:
Occupational allergy, reactive haptens, cytochrome P450, T cell responses, crossreactivity.
