Low cost miniature pressure sensor for biomedical applications

Objective

This proposal is prepared with the help of an exploratory award, which included a feasibility study. Improvement of therapies and diagnosis methods will often be impossible without progresses in monitoring techniques. In many instances the only way to obtain required clinical data with optimal accuracy and reliability will be to insert the sensor within human body as close as possible to the observed organ or area.

However, invasive surgery procedures, increased health expenses and risks for patient such as those due to nosocomial diseases will not be accepted. Among monitored physiological parameters, pressure is certainly one if the most fundamental for physicians in various specialities and demand is already expressed by clinicians and industrials for single use, miniature pressure sensors with optimal sensitivity, accuracy, response time, reliability and user friendliness. In order to achieve very low production costs, below 5 ECU, compatible with disposable, the heart of the intracorporeal pressure set will be designed to satisfy several applications with large potential such as airways pressure within tracheal tubing, intra arterial blood pressure, urinary track and vessel pressure, intra cranian pressure. Annual sales for partners should then exceed 2 millions units. Original patented features will be implemented to simplify manufacturing processes and improve potential and originality of the project.

Within the CRAFT programme the partners will concentrate on:
1) design of miniature pressure sensor adapted for identified biomedical applications;
2) design of dedicated ASIC;
3) coating, connection and data transmission;
4) investigations on biocompatible materials for microsystem housing. Pre competitive results available at that stage will then be used by partners to develop specific sets adapted to each biomedical applications and perform clinical studies. Vertical and horizontal complementarily already exists within core group, however new SME's will join the core partners as new applications are identified or new industrials skills are required.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
