Objective
Autism is a psychiatric disorder, affecting areas of the brain that process information received from the senses. Epidemiological surveys estimate a prevalence of 91 per 10,000 people affected and this equates to in excess of 1.6 million sufferers in the EU. (Source The UK National Autistic Society), There is no known cure, life long support is frequently required and early intervention is important in determining the quality of life for the individual, and other members of the family. Worldwide, Autism was only recognised as a separate condition in the 1940's and there is still evidence of lack of recognition in some geographical and socio economic groups today. Whilst medical research continues in to the causes, possible cures and methods of diagnosis this project is focused on the approach to the condition. The project to evaluate and develop strategies for primary care models is based upon the initial application for an Exploratory Award, the conclusions of the Feasibility Study and the Remarks and Recommendations of the Stage I Evaluation. Therefore the project will:
- Be focused on surveying models of assessment and intervention available throughout the EU.
-Evaluate the developments in recognition of the rights of the sufferer, and other family members. particularly in relation to quality of life, advocacy and self advocacy.
- Research the efficiency of health care delivery through the development of strategies for improving the quality of care.
- Be undertaken within strict research guidelines, acknowledging that issues relating to diagnosis, and causes and cures, for autistic symptoms are being researched elsewhere.
- Clearly define the proposals for the use of the research information by dissemination and product development. The project will seek to identify and develop strategies to improve the quality of care and quality of life for those with autism.
