PLASMA TREATMENTS FOR TEXTILES : NEW PRODUCTS AND ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION

Exploitable results

The textile industry is looking for soft and non-polluting technologies that could open new markets. Plasma treatments functionalize or polymerize only a thin layer on fibre surface by using excited gases. This dry process gives access to a new chemistry for the obtention of new products and is a good alternative to conventional techniques. The following results have been obtained: plasma treatment of wool for shrink-proofing (plasma treatments gave a good results of shrink-resistance the area shrinkage being 14% compared to the untreated, 40%, and chlorinated, 8%, samples); plasma treatment of polyamide for flame retardancy (the flaming characteristics of polyamide were significantly affected by plasma treatments as the samples did not ignite and were seen to melt with the heat of the flame with no flaming droplets observed but for heavier fabrics the ignition occurred although a longer time of flame application was required); plasma treatment of cotton and cotton/polyester for antibacterial properties (after plasma treatment, the bacterial development was nearly stopped, the chlorine plasma treatment was permanent, the antibacterial chemicals did not desorb during use and the antibacterial mechanism occurred by contact between bacteria and treated textile); plasma treatment of polyester and aramide for adhesion promotion (plasma functionalization gave better results than epoxy application and very promising results were obtained at laboratory scale with plasma aramides reaching the adhesion level of epoxy - resorcinol - formol - latex, RFL, treatments).
