MAGNETIC BEARINGS FOR NEW FLEXIBLE SPINNING CONCEPT FOR HIGH QUALITY YARN

Objective

With Active Magnetic Bearings (AMB) two versions of a new concept of a motorized centrifugal spinning spindle were developed. Main results of AMB development are:

The AMB technology is very well adapted for the application of a spinning technology like centrifugal spinning.
The AMB prototypes are stable in process and are easily reproducible.
The global design of the AMB spindle is adequate (rotor dynamics, motor performance, temperature, auxiliary bearings, power consumption)

The results of the developed prototype centrifuges based on Permanent Magnetic Bearing (PMB) may be summarized as follows:

The PMB technology is adequate for stable operation at high speed centrifugal spinning
minimum expense in electronics and cabling,
low steady power consumption at nominal speed,
minimum failure potential.
Europe's textile yarn market with a size of over 10 billion ECU can be characterised by strong price pressure by cheap labour countries and a tendency for smaller batches production which requires quick response to market demands but is difficult to meet with today's machinery. The research project intends to develop a highly flexible new spinning machine for high quality yarns which produces the yarn inside a bobin instead through external winding on the bobin. This concept will allow high automatization and quick changeover to new batches, virtually man free running with reduced maintenance and leads to a reduction of the spinning cost by 15-20 %. To this end a very advanced spindle concept with high speed active and passive magnetic bearings and high efficiency integral drive motors will be developed, doubling the rotational speeds and minimising the energy consumption. A completely new machine concept taking full benefit of the new spinning method will be elaborated and a prototype built and tested under industrial conditions.

The new machine concept will allow European machine manufacturers as well as high-tech European magnetic bearing producers to increase significantly their market share. The reduction of the yarn price will bring back to European yarn producers the leadership in high quality yarns and increase their market share.
