Objective
The aim of this research activity is to investigate marine applications of composite materials, such as structural and outfitting components for large merchant and cruise ships, small and medium-size vessels.
Marine applications of composite materials, such as structural and outfitting components for large merchant and cruise ships, small and medium-size vessels have been investigated. 2 different fields of activity (new applications of composites in ships and improvement in existing applications) have been investigated. The objectives for new applications are the design and building of panel and pipe prototypes, the definition and elements and data to implement new rules and regulations and the validation of design procedures through the correlation of calculations and tests. The objectives for the improvement of existing applications concern the evaluation of new safety margins to failure, the definition of methods for the qualification of structural components with respect to quality assurance procedures and the review of rules and regulations.
Starting from a review of existing rules and regulations, the technical specification of selected components (pipes and structural elements) has been defined. An analysis of the theory and performance of some of the existing micro-macro mechanical codes has been carried out. The most suitable resin fibre combinations for the construction of the prototypes have been selected by means of experimental tests on samples and micro-macro mechanical calculations. Bending tests on large panel prototypes have been performed to be used in subsequent steps for theoretical and experimental correlations.
The project has shown that it is possible to obtain composite panels and pipes which are not combustible and do not produce smoke or toxic gases in quantity when subject to fire exposure. The main applications of these composite materials are on board ship.
The research is oriented towards two different fields of activity: new applications of composites in ships and improvement in existing applications.
The objectives for new applications are:
-the design and building of panel and pipe prototype
- the definition of elements and data to implement new rules and regulations
- the validation of design procedures through the correlation of calculations and tests.
The objectives for the improvement of existing applications concern the evaluation of new safety margins to failure, the definition of methods for the qualification of structural components with respect to q.a. procedures and the review of rules and regulations.
