Objective
The project is primarily concerned with the establishment of the basic requirement for a feedback control system for the automatic and robotic MAG welding of sheet steel automotive components. However, some attention will be paid to other metallic materials and other welding and joining processes to define the limitations of the control system.
1. The type and recurrence of defects in MAG fillet welds in sheet steel components have been identified and the significance of welding position, fit-up and accuracy determined.
2. Significant reductions in component reject and repair can be achieved by effective weld monitoring.
3. Welding parameters in current use for robotic MAG welding can result in mixed mode metal transfer which is very tolerant of joint conditions but not the most efficient of welding techniques.
4. Tolerance boxes have been developed for MAG welding of fillet joints in sheet steel.
5. A combined monitoring and control system for the MAG welding of sheet steel has been successfully constructed and evaluated.
The exact requirements in terms of joint designs, joint quality and production rates will be defined and an appropriate monitoring system developed using state of the art sensors.
Modelling will be used to identify critical parameters that need to be controlled. This work will lead to the definition of the requirements of a feedback control system after which a prototype system will be designed, built and tested under both laboratory and production conditions.
