Superior aluminium nitride with special microstructure design for improved machining behaviour

Objective


Two types of AIN materials with a gradient in its mechanical properties was developed within this project. These materials exhibit a different grinding behaviour. The thermal conductivity of these materials vary between 150 and 190 W/mK.
Furthermore, a theoretical model is available which can describe the conditions for brittle and ductile material removal behaviour. Additionally, a ductile mode grinding process was developed which can produce a surface roughness Rzmax less than or equal to 0.8 um.
