Automation of a leather piece feed system for the manufacture of shoe uppers

Objective

The production of shoe uppers depends upon the manual input of a qualified person to ensure the precise positioning of the pieces at each of the various fabrication process stages. The need for manual input is due to the difficulties encountered in the supple materials used in shoe production. The automation of this manual intervention is the key to the overall automation of shoe production. Two prototype assembles were constructed and tested for use at the sewing and trimming stages of production. The guiding assemblies constructed comprised a measuring camera to ascertain the position of pieces and a computerised piloting assembly which was conceived to respond to a number of restraints. These restraints included: flexibility with respect to piece shape (within given size limits); flexibility according to the nature of the work involved in a given process; presentation of all the relevant points of a piece to a process; accounting of deformations to ensure precision in the finished work; retention or improvement of work rates. A comparative productivity study between manual production lines, and lines automated to the characteristics tested in prototype assemblies was carried out on shoe designs from 2 manufacturers. Analysis of the integrated line incorporated both the provisioning and arranging of shoe components. The results were favourable in respect of the proposed integrated automation with the complete cycle time improving by 30% to 80% according to the shoe model tested. The assembly is adaptable to the process principally through software, module organisation or the adaptation of module technology. The means of implementation are simple and readily available. Advance study of the modules in handling and manipulation, have indicated that the system may prove an invaluable addition to automated processes.
